Nick Chubb and Sony Michel announce they will return to Georgia in 2017

The 2016 SEC East Champion was Florida but if we can, we’d like to go ahead and coronate Georgia as the 2017 East Champs. Yesterday running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel announced that they will be back in Athens for their senior year. Both men had toyed with the idea of going to the NFL but in the end they will return to play for Kirby Smart.

According to Chubb,

“It just didn’t feel right. I felt like if I needed to leave I’d feel it and be able to accept it and move on. Something kept telling me, Nick maybe not right now. It’s not the right time. It all came back to the kind of person I am, to not just leave because things aren’t going your way. But to fight through your problems and the adversity, and that’s what I feel I did.”

Chubb will likely be one of the favorites to win the Heisman as a senior if he can stay healthy. His sophomore season was cut short to injury and he never could get going this year due to poor offensive line play. Had he come out Chubb would’ve likely been a mid-round pick. Next year he can rack up some stats and hopefully jump into the first round.

As a freshman Chubb lit up defenses for 1,547 yards backing up future first round pick Todd Gurley. Last season he only had just under a thousand.

His backup Sony Michele will return. Michele has shown flashes the last three years and is good enough to start on any SEC team. After Chubb got hurt in 2015 Michele took off for 1161 yards and 8 TDs along with 270 yards receiving. This year, however his numbers were down and he only rushed for 753 yards.

The Bulldogs are pretty potent on offense with Jacob Eason returning. Eason was shaky as a freshman and Georgia lost some games to Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech that they seemed to have in the bag in the fourth quarter. UGA linebackers Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy also are coming back for their senior seasons.

With a lot of guys returning to play in Athens the Bulldgos have a lot of momentum. Earlier today Georgia got a big commit when OT Isaiah Wilson announced he was going to play for Coach Smart. Wilson is ranked as the #2 prospect coming out of high school. Smart is building something at Georgia and next year could be their year.
