By Tony Acree Kentucky seemed to have it all going their way Saturday. EPSN’s College Game Day kicked off the morning at Rupp Arena for the battle between college basketball’s two winningest programs, with 4th ranked UK number one in wins, 2nd ranked Kansas number two. Famous ring announcer, Michael Buffer, did the pregame introductions. Kentucky even set a new Guinness Book of World Record for the loudest indoor crowed. Then they ran out to a 12 point lead midway through the first half. The problem for the Cats was they forgot to finish.
Kentucky gave up 21 points off of 17 turnovers and the Jayhawks more experienced team exposed Kentucky’s inability to guard people off the dribble. Kansas shot 60% in the second half as Kentucky seemed to have no answer on defense and the Cats continued to turn the ball over in crucial situations and shot a dismal 59 percent from the free throw line.
Malik Monk and Derek Willis both tossed in 18 points, though Monk didn’t score a point in the second half until under the 4 minute mark. Isiah Briscoe scored 12 and De’Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo tallied 10 each.
Kansas was led in scoring by Frank Mason III with 21, Josh Jackson with 20. Landen Lucas contributed 13 and Devonte Graham 12. Bill Self’s Kansas team now owns a two game winning streak against John Calipari’s Wildcats.
Next up for Kentucky is Georgia on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena.
